Here is a question I get all the time: what do I wear to my newborn session? Not what you wear in the photos — I’ve got that part handled. But what do you put on to drive to the studio? What do you bring? What does the morning actually look like?
Knowing what to wear for newborn photos on the day of your session is less about fashion. It’s more about showing up in a way that makes everything easier — for you and for your baby. Let me walk you through the whole morning, start to finish, so nothing catches you off guard.
What Should I Wear to Drive to My Newborn Session?
Deciding what to wear to your newborn session is easy. Wear something easy to take off — a zip-up hoodie, loose button-down, or soft pullover that does not have to go over your head. What you wear to my natural light studio in McMurray, PA is completely separate from what you wear in the photos. Do not stress about arriving camera-ready.
The reason the over-the-head rule matters: once your hair and makeup are done, pulling a fitted top off over a fresh set of soft curls is genuinely miserable. A zip-up or button-down means you can slip out of it in seconds without touching your hair at all. Or just make it super simple and borrow a silk robe from me for your hair & makeup.
Comfortable pants or leggings are perfect for the drive over. You are going to be sitting, moving around the studio, and focused on your baby — not on whether your waistband is digging in. Wear whatever feels good on your body right now. This morning is already full enough without adding that pressure.
Keep jewelry minimal or bring a few pieces to try alongside your session gown. Shoes? Whatever slips off easiest — most moms are barefoot for the majority of the session anyway.
What Happens When You Arrive at the Studio?
When you walk through the door at Petite Magnolia, the first thing that happens is not the session — it is hair and makeup, and you have time to settle in before we ever pick up a camera.
My studio is on the second floor of a brick-and-mortar building in McMurray, PA — a warm, quiet, dedicated space that was built specifically for this work. Families drive over from Upper St. Clair, Peters Township, Mt. Lebanon, Sewickley, and across the South Hills, and the first thing almost every mom says when she walks in is that the room feels calm. That is completely intentional.
You sit down. You get a few minutes to breathe. Then hair and makeup begin. A professional artist is there and ready — your only job is to sit in the chair and let someone take care of you for a little while. Tell her how you generally like to look — natural, a little more polished, somewhere in between — and she handles the rest. No Pinterest boards needed. No instructions required.
This is the part of the morning my clients consistently say they did not expect to love as much as they did. There is something about having someone do your hair and makeup while your baby is calm and the room is quiet that feels like a genuine exhale. It is one of the rare moments in early motherhood where someone is just taking care of you with no agenda and no rush.
How Do I Choose What to Wear in the Newborn Photos?
Once hair and makeup are done, we move straight to the wardrobe — and this takes about ten minutes, not an hour. Everything you will wear in your newborn photos is already here at the studio. My client wardrobe is stocked with gowns, wraps, and dresses in soft, neutral tones, all chosen to photograph beautifully in natural light and feel good on a postpartum body.
I show you what I think will work best for your coloring and your style, you try a couple of options on, and we land on something that feels right. That is genuinely it. No stress. No decisions you had to make in advance.
If you have a specific look in mind — a color you love, a style you saw in my portfolio — mention it when you reach out. I’ll make sure it is waiting for you. You can read more about what to expect from your experience in this recent post

What Should I Bring to a Newborn Photo Session?
Pack light — most of what you need is already at the studio. But a few specific items are worth tucking into your bag the night before so you are not scrambling on the morning of your session.
Bring a pacifier if your baby uses one. I also keep a handful of pacifiers at the studio just in case. It is one of the most useful tools for keeping a newborn settled between setups. It can make a significant difference in how smoothly the session flows. If you are breastfeeding, bring whatever cover or setup you normally use — we will almost certainly pause to feed at some point, and that is completely expected and always welcome.
A change of clothes for the baby is always a smart addition. And if you have a personal swaddle or a blanket that means something to your family, bring it. Those personal items often end up in some of the most meaningful images of the whole session.
For yourself: your phone if you want to send family updates. Everything else is already handled.
Common Questions About What to Wear for Newborn Photos
Do I need to do my own hair and makeup before I arrive? No — please do not. Professional hair and makeup is included at my McMurray studio for every full newborn session. You drive over however you drive over, and the artist takes care of everything when you arrive. Arriving with your hair already done can actually make the artist’s job harder, so come exactly as you are.
What if I am still not feeling great about my postpartum body? That is one of the most common things I hear. And it is exactly why the wardrobe and hair and makeup experience exists. My job is to show you what I see. It is almost always different from what you see in the mirror right now. The gowns you wear for your newborn session are chosen specifically to flatter a postpartum body. The lighting and direction I provide do the rest. You do not have to feel ready. You just have to show up.
What should my partner wear? For partners in full family or parent-and-baby images, I give specific styling guidance during your planning call. Generally: simple, neutral tones — nothing with large logos, busy patterns, or bright colors. A clean henley, linen shirt, or soft knit in a warm neutral is almost always perfect.
What if I forget something? The studio is stocked with almost everything you might need for your baby. If you forget the pacifier or an extra onesie, we will figure it out. The only thing worth making sure you have is your baby — everything else is manageable.
The Short Version
Wear a zip-up or button-down to drive over. Arrive as you are — hair, makeup, and wardrobe are all handled at the studio. Bring a pacifier, a nursing cover if you need one, and a bottle & formula if you need it. Everything else is already here.
