What to Expect from Your Pittsburgh Maternity, Newborn, and Family Photography Experience
Whether you’re newly expecting, counting down the days until your baby arrives, or trying to hold onto every moment with your growing family – I’m so glad you found your way here. Here’s what to expect from your Pittsburgh photography experience.
I’m Brooke, a Pittsburgh maternity, newborn, and family photographer and the owner of Petite Magnolia Photography. For over a decade, I’ve been creating a photography experience for families throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. I’ve created an experience that feels just as meaningful as the images themselves. Based in my natural light studio in McMurray, I work with families across Peters Township, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Cranberry Township, and beyond.
If you’ve been searching for a photographer and wondering what the experience is actually like – not just the pretty photos, but the whole process from start to finish – this post is for you.
A Timeless, Natural Photography Style Designed to Last
My photography style is soft, organic, and intentionally timeless. It’s designed to feel like a deep breath in the middle of your beautifully busy season. You won’t find heavy props, overly trendy edits, or stiff posing here. Instead, you’ll find honest, heartfelt images that focus on the real connection and emotion within your family.
Whether we’re documenting your first pregnancy or your fourth session together, the goal is always the same. I’m here to preserve your story with beauty, warmth, and intention. In a way that still feels like you twenty years from now.
This timeless approach is important because trends come and go. But the way your family looked at each other, the way your toddler rested their head on your shoulder, the way your newborn curled into your chest – those moments are forever. And your images should honor that.
Pittsburgh Maternity, Newborn, Baby, and Family Photography Sessions
At Petite Magnolia Photography, I specialize in four types of sessions, each designed with legacy and connection in mind:
Maternity photography – Celebrating the beauty of pregnancy in a way that feels natural and empowering. Most maternity sessions take place in my McMurray natural light studio. You’ll have access to my curated wardrobe closet and professional hair and makeup.
Newborn photography – Gentle, baby-led sessions that prioritize your newborn’s comfort and safety. These sessions are calm, unhurried, and designed to document the tiny details that change so quickly.
Baby milestone sessions – From sitting up to first birthdays, these sessions capture the personality and growth that unfolds in your baby’s first year.
Family photography – Whether your family is a party of three or a party of eight, these sessions are about documenting your family exactly as you are right now – messy, beautiful, and full of love.
For families who want to document the full journey, I also offer The Collective Membership – an 18-month photography experience that covers multiple milestones from maternity through baby’s first year and beyond. It’s the most meaningful (and most stress-free) way to make sure none of these fleeting moments slip by undocumented.
Where Pittsburgh Photography Sessions Take Place
Natural Light Studio in McMurray, PA
Most sessions take place at my natural light studio in McMurray, Pennsylvania. The studio was intentionally designed with families in mind – a calming, neutral-toned space flooded with gorgeous natural light where you can relax and truly enjoy the experience.
It’s also home to my curated client wardrobe closet, stocked with beautiful gowns, outfits, and accessories that are hand-selected to photograph beautifully and complement your session perfectly. Everything is here, waiting for you – so there’s nothing you need to bring except your family.
Outdoor Field Sessions Near McMurray
If your heart is drawn to something a little more organic and open-air, an outdoor field session might be exactly what you’re looking for. Just five minutes from the studio, there’s a peaceful, tucked-away stretch of land with tall grasses, beautiful mature trees, and the most gorgeous golden-hour evening light. It’s the kind of place that feels like you’ve stepped outside of the everyday for a moment – and it makes for an absolutely stunning backdrop for family photography.
Families often choose the field because it gives kids the room to just be kids. There’s space to run, to explore, to pick wildflowers for mom. You’re not managing the energy of a toddler who’s had too much sitting time – instead, you’re watching them be free and joyful, which is exactly the kind of genuine moment that makes for incredible photographs. The evening light is absolutely beautiful, and the natural landscape speaks for itself. No heavy styling needed; the field does the work.
Outdoor field sessions are typically available between April and November, weather permitting. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers and lush, vibrant greenery. Fall offers warm, golden light and the kind of rich, natural colors that feel timeless in photographs. The beauty of the field is that every season looks and feels different – which means if you come back for another session down the road (especially for our Collective Membership families), your images will feel completely fresh and new.
In-Home Newborn and Family Sessions
I also offer in-home sessions, which are especially wonderful for cozy, lifestyle newborn portraits. There’s something incredibly special about documenting your family in the space where real life happens – the nursery you spent months preparing, the couch where you do late-night feeds, the morning light that pours through your bedroom window.
In-home sessions are a beautiful option when your space has good natural light and lighter tones. If you’re not sure which setting is best for your family, just ask – I’m always happy to help you decide.
Communities I Serve Throughout the Pittsburgh Area
I photograph families all across the greater Pittsburgh area, including Peters Township, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Wexford, Cranberry Township, and the surrounding communities. No matter where your session takes place, every detail is intentionally chosen so that it lets your family simply be together.
What It’s Like to Work with a Full-Service Pittsburgh Photographer
From the very first time you reach out to the moment your finished artwork is hanging on your walls, every single step of this experience is designed to feel easy, supportive, and completely tailored to your family.
Here’s what that actually looks like in practice:
I’ll help you select the perfect wardrobe from my curated studio closet (or style pieces you already own). Professional hair and makeup is done right here in the studio before your session, so you’ll feel confident, beautiful, and like the best version of yourself. I handle the posing, the flow, and all of the details so you don’t have to think about a thing.
You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about your toddler having a meltdown. You just get to show up, be present with your family, and trust that I’ll take care of everything else. That’s what full-service photography really means – and it’s exactly why my clients come back season after season.
Why Heirloom Artwork Is Part of the Pittsburgh Photography Experience
Here’s something I believe with my whole heart: your images aren’t meant to live in a folder on your phone or buried in a cloud drive. They’re meant to be seen, touched, and cherished – every single day.
That’s why a significant part of what I do goes beyond the photography session itself. I offer thoughtfully designed heirloom albums, framed fine art prints, matted prints in linen keepsake boxes. Custom wall galleries, and beautifully designed birth announcements are also available – all created to become a lasting part of your home and your family’s story.
After your session, we’ll sit down together during your personal ordering appointment and I’ll help you select the perfect pieces for your space. There’s no guesswork, no overwhelming online galleries to sort through alone. I guide you through everything from selecting your favorite images to choosing artwork that complements your home. This season of your life deserves so much more than digital storage.
How to Know If Petite Magnolia Photography Is Right for Your Family
This experience was built for you if you’re looking for a calm, guided photography experience where every detail is taken care of. If you’re drawn to natural, timeless imagery that focuses on real connection rather than stiff poses. If you value both the beauty and the meaning behind what we’re preserving. If you want to actually be in the photos with your family – not just the one behind the camera. And if you’re a busy parent who just wants someone to hold your hand through the process and make the entire thing feel effortless.
If you’ve been searching for a Pittsburgh maternity photographer, Pittsburgh newborn photographer, or Pittsburgh family photographer who truly honors your time, your family, and this season of life – I would love to be that person for you.
