At six months, babies are old enough to hold themselves up, interact with the world around them, and show off a personality that has been quietly building since the day they were born. They are curious about everything. They reach for everything. They look around the studio with these wide, wondering eyes that make every frame feel like a discovery.
But they are still so soft. Still so round. Still unmistakably baby in a way that starts to shift faster than you expect after this point. Six months is that particular sweet spot where your baby is fully themselves but still very much in that earliest, most tender chapter of babyhood.
What a six month session looks like at Petite Magnolia:
You arrive at the studio and we start with hair and makeup — included for every full session, because you deserve to feel taken care of too. Wardrobe for both of you is handled from the client closet. Then we settle in at whatever pace your baby sets.
Six month sessions are typically a mix of solo baby images — on the beanbag, in a basket, sitting up on a textured surface — and parent-and-baby images that capture the connection between you. Some of my favorite six month images are the ones where a baby is sitting up, completely focused on their parent’s face, and the parent does not even know the camera is pointed at them. That look happens at every six month session. I never stop loving it.
Wardrobe for baby at six months is soft and simple — layettes, wraps, little rompers in neutral tones. Nothing fussy or overdone. The baby is the whole point.
Sitter Sessions — The Six to Nine Month Window
The sitter session is for babies who are sitting up confidently but not yet fully mobile — typically somewhere in the six to nine month range, though every baby hits this stage at their own pace. It is one of the most versatile milestone ages because your baby is interactive, expressive, and settled enough to stay in one place long enough for beautiful images.
Sitter sessions have a relaxed, playful quality to them that I love. Babies at this age are genuinely funny — they have opinions, they make sounds, they react to everything. They’re also still small enough that the images have that tender quality that does not last much longer once they start pulling up and walking.
If your baby is in this window and you have not booked yet, this is one of the milestone ages I most encourage families not to skip. The sitting-but-not-yet-walking stage is genuinely brief, and the images from it are some of the most universally loved in any baby’s first year album.
What makes a sitter session different from a six month session: The main difference is mobility and interaction level. A true six month session often happens right as a baby hits the sitting milestone — they are still a little wobbly and require more support. A sitter session happens once they are sitting confidently and starting to show more personality. Both are beautiful. Both are worth doing. The portrait session comes first. We photograph your baby in a clean, styled setup — soft neutrals, simple wardrobe, beautiful light. These are the images that end up framed. The cake smash comes second. A custom cake — designed to coordinate with the session aesthetic — and your baby. What happens next is entirely up to them. Some babies approach the cake with caution, poking at the frosting and considering their options. Some dive face-first with zero hesitation. Some sit and look at it like it might be dangerous. All of them eventually get cake everywhere. All of it is photographed. All of it is wonderful.
The cake smash images are some of the most joyful, shareable, can’t-stop-laughing images I make all year. I have watched a lot of dads try not to cry during cake smashes. I am not going to say anything else about that.
What to bring to a one year session: I handle wardrobe and styling as always, but for the cake smash portion you will want to bring a change of clothes for your baby (or plan to wrap them in a towel after — both are valid). What if my baby will not cooperate? They probably will not — and that is completely fine. I do not photograph ideal babies. I photograph the baby who showed up. Do I need to have done a newborn session first? Absolutely not. Milestone sessions stand completely on their own. Many of my milestone clients are families who did not have newborn photos and want to start documenting now. Wherever you are starting from, we make it count.
Can grandparents or siblings be included? Yes — siblings are always welcome in full sessions. Grandparents can be included in one session for Collective Membership clients. Just let me know when you reach out and we will plan for it.
What is the difference between a full session and a petite session? A full session includes wardrobe, hair and makeup, full parent and baby portraits, and a design appointment.
