I’m sure we can all think of a few ways to help out a friend who has just recently become a new mom (even if it’s for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time). We can take them a meal, offer to watch their older children, take them a cup of coffee- the list goes on. But, one of the simplest and most important things you can do is to check in on her. Seriously check in on her. How is she really doing? Yes, having a newborn can absolutely be overwhelming but does it seem that it’s more than that with her?
Postpartum depression affects 1 in 9 women and in some areas can be as high as 1 in 5 women, according to the CDC. Thankfully, postpartum depression is treatable- the key is recognizing it and getting help.
Kelly Brennan has written some great blog posts on postpartum depression and she talks with one local Pittsburgh father about his experience with his wife’s postpartum depression. Take a minute and read it- you never know when you’ll need to help a friend in need. You can also follow Kelly over on instagram @kelly_brennan_412
