DIY Gallery Wall

As I’m sure you know, I firmly believe that photos deserve to live outside of your phone, in your home. Gallery walls are one of my absolute favorite ways to display those beautiful images! Below are some of my best tips and tricks for a great DIY gallery wall.

  • consider adding a little color to the wall through paint or a textured wall paper to really make the images pop
  • go with one size & style frame to alleviate the decision of where to hang which frame and which looks best
  • try using all black & white images for a cohesive look, especially if using candid, everyday photos
  • be sure to select close up and far away shots for a balanced look
  • measure and hang 2” between frames
  • measure your space first before choosing frames
  • don’t place the top of the gallery wall too close to the ceiling
  • use painter’s tape, measuring tape & a pencil to help mark your reference marks
  • if you don’t purchase frames from a photographer, be sure that the hangers on the back of the frames are the same on all frames.  Even if you measure everything correctly, a slightly misplaced hanger will cause the frame to be off.

Before you’re off to the store to find the perfect frames for your home, remember these last few thoughts:

-a gallery wall is the perfect way to tell your family’s story and something that you can add to year after year.

-symmetrical is one of the simplest looks to achieve yet has the most impact if each piece of art is matted and framed identically

-keep your frames 6-12 inches above furniture to avoid damages

-if you’re really struggling to figure out how you want to arrange your art! Trace each frame onto kraft paper and after cutting it out, line it up with the back side of the frame to mark in pencil where the hanger is.  Once taped to the wall and arranged, all you have to do is hammer a nail into each pencil marking, rip off all the paper, and hang up the art!
