A Complete Guide to Maternity Photography: What to Expect, From Booking to Heirloom Artwork

If you’re wondering what to expect at a maternity photography session — when to book, what to wear, what you walk away with — this guide is for you. Everything you need to know. From when to book to what to wear to what you actually walk away with at the end. Whether you are just starting to research or you are ready to reach out today, I want you to have the full picture before you decide.

There is a version of you right now that will never exist again.

Not the version that has it together. Not the version that is ready for the camera. The real one — the one whose body is doing something extraordinary. The one who touches her belly without thinking. The one who is already becoming someone new in ways she cannot fully articulate yet.

That version of you deserves to be remembered. Not because you have to earn it or because you feel beautiful every day of your pregnancy — but because this season is singular, and the women who document it almost always look back and say it was one of the best decisions they made.

Why Maternity Photos Matter More Than Most People Realize

Let me be honest about something first. A lot of moms come to me ambivalent about maternity photos. They want them in theory, but they are not sure they deserve them, not sure they will love how they look, not sure it is worth the investment when there is so much else to spend money on before a baby arrives.

I hear every version of this. And every single time, my answer is the same: you do not have to feel confident to book this. You just have to trust me enough to try.

Here is what I have watched happen over and over in my studio. A mom arrives uncertain. Maybe a little nervous. Not loving her body right now, not sure what to expect. And then something happens during the session — a moment where the light is right and she is not thinking about anything except the baby she is about to meet — and the camera catches something she has never seen in herself before.

Not perfection. Recognition. The version of herself that the people who love her have been seeing all along.

At her ordering appointment, she sees her images for the first time as printed proofs spread out on a table. And the conversation changes entirely. It is not about the money anymore. It is about which frame. Which image made her hold her breath. Which portrait is going in the nursery so her child can one day look at it and see who their mother was before they ever arrived.

That is why maternity photos matter. Not because pregnancy is always beautiful in the way Instagram suggests. Because it is real, and singular, and worth preserving in something more permanent than a camera roll.

When to Book Your Maternity Session

Timing is everything with maternity photography, and there are two separate timing questions worth answering: when to reserve and when to document.

When to reserve: As early as possible. My calendar fills several months in advance, and maternity sessions in particular tend to book up quickly in spring and fall. If you are in your first or early second trimester and thinking about maternity photos, reach out now — even if your session date feels far away. Reserving early simply secures your spot and gives us time to plan everything properly.

When to document: When clients ask what to expect at a maternity photography session, my first answer is usually about timing: most book between 28 and 36 weeks. At this stage your bump is full and beautifully round, you are still comfortable enough to move through a session without difficulty, and the images have that unmistakably pregnant quality that makes maternity photography so distinctive.

Before 28 weeks, the bump can look smaller than you might hope in photos — especially in the early weeks of the third trimester. After 34-36 weeks, many moms are uncomfortable enough that a session feels like more than they want to take on. That said, every body and every pregnancy is different. I have photographed stunning sessions at 36 weeks with moms who felt wonderful. We figure out what is right for you during your planning call.

What to Expect at a Maternity Photography Session at Petite Magnolia

This is where Petite Magnolia looks genuinely different from most photographers you will find when searching for a Pittsburgh maternity photographer. Because a session with me is not just about the photos. It is about the entire experience from the moment you book to the moment your artwork arrives.

A planning call before your session. We talk through your style, your hopes for the session, how you are feeling about being in front of the camera, and what wardrobe options feel right for you. By the time we hang up, you should feel completely prepared and genuinely excited.

Full client wardrobe access. My studio wardrobe is stocked with gowns, dresses, and wraps in soft, warm neutrals — all chosen to photograph beautifully in natural light and flatter a pregnant body at every stage. You do not have to shop. You do not have to guess. Your look is already waiting for you when you arrive.

Professional hair and makeup on site. A professional artist is at the studio the morning of your session. You walk in however you walk in and leave looking like yourself on your very best day. This is included for every full session — not an add-on, not an upgrade.

Complete direction throughout. I tell you where to stand, how to turn, what to do with your hands, when to look up and when to look down. You never have to figure out posing on your own. There will be a moment — almost always when your partner is watching you without realizing the camera is on them — where something completely real happens between two people. I catch it every time.

Preserving Your Maternity Portraits through Heirloom Artwork

A design and ordering appointment after your session. About two to three weeks after your session, you come back to the studio and I lay your images out as printed proofs. We choose what belongs in your home together — the portrait for the nursery, the album with your whole pregnancy inside it, the framed print your child will grow up walking past. I guide every decision so nothing feels overwhelming.

Studio Sessions vs. Outdoor Sessions — Which Is Right for You

Petite Magnolia offers both studio and outdoor maternity sessions. The right choice depends entirely on your style and what feels most like you.

Studio sessions happen at my McMurray studio on the second floor, flooded with soft natural light. The controlled environment means we can take our time, try different looks from the wardrobe, and create images with a clean, timeless quality. Studio sessions have an intimacy to them that I love for maternity work — the whole world feels like it falls away and it is just you, your baby, and the light.

Outdoor sessions happen at my field location about five minutes from the studio — open sky, tall grass, golden light in the late afternoon. Outdoor sessions have a freedom and movement that studio sessions do not, and a flowing gown in a field at golden hour is one of those images that never stops being stunning. For outdoor sessions I still recommend starting at the studio for hair and makeup so you arrive at the field ready to go.

Not sure which one is right for you? That is exactly what the planning call is for. We talk through your vision and I make a recommendation based on your style, your timeline, and what I think will give you the most beautiful results. You can see examples of both studio and outdoor sessions on Instagram.

What to Wear — And Why You Probably Do Not Have to Worry About It

“What do I wear?” is the question I hear most from moms who are researching maternity photographers. And the answer I get to give every single time is one of my favorites. You probably do not have to find anything.

The client wardrobe at Petite Magnolia has everything you need. Flowing gowns in warm neutrals. Fitted dresses that show the bump beautifully. Wraps and layered pieces for a more organic look. All of it chosen specifically because it photographs beautifully and feels good on a pregnant body.

If you want to bring something of your own — a piece that means something to you, a color you love, something your partner gave you — absolutely bring it. But you do not have to. The wardrobe is here, it is ready, and it is part of what makes the whole experience feel handled from start to finish.

You can read more about my approach to the full session experience and what every step looks like in detail.

What Happens After Your Session

The session is only the beginning. And honestly, the part that happens after is what sets a Petite Magnolia experience completely apart from most photographers you will encounter when searching for a pregnancy photographer in Pittsburgh.

Your maternity portraits belong somewhere your child can find them. A framed print in the nursery they will stare at before they are old enough to know what it means. An album with your whole pregnancy inside it.  The bump, the tenderness, the particular way you looked in those months before everything changed. A matted portrait on your nightstand that reminds you, on the hard days, of who you were and what your body did.

Every piece I offer is archival quality, handcrafted, and built to last decades. Heirloom albums with lay-flat pages and linen covers. Framed fine art prints with solid wood frames and conservation acrylic. Finished pieces that do justice to how extraordinary this season actually was.

Combining Your Maternity and Newborn Sessions

One of the most popular options at Petite Magnolia is the Collective Membership — designed for families who want to document multiple seasons without having to rebook and replan every time. Most Collective clients start with a maternity session and continue through the newborn, six month, and first year sessions.

There is something genuinely beautiful about having images from across that whole first chapter. The bump, the brand new baby, the six month milestone, the first birthday — all photographed in the same style, in the same studio, with the same level of care. They tell a story together that no single session can.

You can learn more about what a newborn session looks like and how the two connect.  If you want to understand the philosophy and the person behind all of it, that is a good place to start too.

Ready to Reserve Your Pittsburgh Maternity Session?

If you have made it to the end of this guide, you probably already know whether this feels right. Most of my favorite clients started with a message that said something like “I think I want to do this but I am not totally sure where to start.” That is more than enough.

Reach out here and tell me a little about where you are in your pregnancy. I will take it from there — the planning, the wardrobe, the scheduling, all of it. You just have to show up.

I would love to be your Pittsburgh maternity photographer.
