If you’re expecting and starting to think about how to prepare for maternity photos in Pittsburgh, first of all – congratulations. This is such a beautiful season, and the fact that you’re thinking about preserving it says a lot about the kind of mama you already are.
I’m Brooke, the photographer behind Petite Magnolia Photography, and I’ve been photographing maternity sessions for families across the Pittsburgh area for over a decade. One of the questions I hear most often is, “How do I prepare for my maternity session?” So I wanted to put everything in one place – timing, styling, what to expect, and how to make the most of your experience.

When Is the Best Time to Schedule Maternity Photos in Pittsburgh?
The ideal window for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump has that gorgeous, full shape, and you’re typically still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. Too early, and the bump may not be as prominent in photos. Too late, and you might be dealing with more swelling, discomfort, or simply not feeling your best.
That said, I always recommend reaching out during your early second trimester to reserve your spot. My calendar fills up – especially during spring and summer – and reserving early gives us plenty of time to plan your wardrobe, talk through your vision, and make sure every detail is handled before your session day.
If you’re past 34 weeks and just now realizing you want maternity photos, please don’t count yourself out. Reach out anyway. I’ve photographed beautiful sessions at 36 and even 37 weeks, and they were stunning. Every belly is beautiful, and there’s no expiration date on documenting this moment.
What to Wear for Your Pittsburgh Maternity Session
This is hands down the number one question I get from expecting mamas – and it’s also the thing I want you to stress about the least. Why? Because I take care of it for you.
My McMurray studio is home to a curated client wardrobe closet filled with beautiful gowns and dresses specifically selected for maternity photography. Think soft, flowy fabrics that drape beautifully over your bump. Elegant necklines and silhouettes that flatter every body. Neutral and complementary tones that photograph timelessly and won’t compete with your face or your connection with your family.
Before your session, we’ll talk through options together so you feel completely confident in what you’ll be wearing. A few general styling tips: flowy fabrics and form-fitting silhouettes both photograph beautifully for maternity. Avoiding busy patterns, large logos, or anything too trendy – the focus should be on you, your bump, and the emotion in the images. If your partner or older children are joining the session, I’ll help coordinate their wardrobe too, so everyone looks intentional and polished without being too “matchy.”
You don’t need to buy a single thing or to spend hours scrolling online. You just need to show up and trust the process.
Professional Hair and Makeup for Your Maternity Photos
Professional hair and makeup is available right here in the studio before your maternity session, and it’s one of the parts of this experience that mamas rave about the most. After months of growing a human, dealing with hormonal skin changes, and living in leggings – having someone pamper you and make you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself is honestly the best gift.
It’s not about looking overdone. It’s about looking like you on your very best day – rested, glowing, and radiant. When you feel beautiful, that confidence radiates through every single image. And you deserve that, mama.
Where Maternity Photos Take Place in the Pittsburgh Area
I offer two stunning options for maternity photos in Pittsburgh, and both are designed to make you look and feel incredible.
My private natural light studio in McMurray is where most maternity sessions take place. The space is intentionally designed with soft, consistent natural light, a calming neutral palette, and everything you need for a stress-free experience – including the client wardrobe and on-site hair and makeup. It’s warm, it’s beautiful, and it’s a space where you can completely relax and enjoy the moment.
The outdoor field location is just five minutes from the studio, and it’s an absolutely breathtaking option for maternity sessions – especially between April and November. Think tall grasses, beautiful trees, and that dreamy golden-hour sunlight that makes everything glow. If you love the idea of something a little wilder and more organic, the field is the perfect setting. It’s also a wonderful choice when your partner or older children are joining the session. There’s room for everyone to move, explore, and just be together.
I serve expecting families throughout the Pittsburgh area, including Peters Township, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Wexford, and Cranberry Township. Both session locations are conveniently located in McMurray and easily accessible from all of these communities.
Intimate and Boudoir-Style Maternity Portraits
For mamas who want to take things a step further, I also offer more intimate, boudoir-style maternity portraits. These sessions are about celebrating your body in this incredible season – the curves, the strength, the beauty of what you’re carrying. They’re artistic, tasteful, and deeply empowering.
This is always guided by your comfort level. Some mamas want just a few intimate images mixed into their session, while others want a dedicated portion focused entirely on this style. Either way, I’ll guide you through every pose and every moment so it feels safe, beautiful, and completely you. These images often end up being the ones mamas treasure most. A private, powerful reminder of what their body was capable of.
Including Your Partner and Family in Maternity Photos
Your maternity session isn’t just about you (although you absolutely deserve to be celebrated). It’s also about your growing family. Partners are always welcome and encouraged to be part of the session – those images of the two of you together, hands on the bump, looking at each other in this moment of anticipation, are some of the most meaningful portraits you’ll ever own.
If you have older children, bringing them along is a beautiful way to document this transition. Watching a toddler talk to your belly or a big sibling gently rest their head against mama’s belly – those are the genuine, unscripted moments that make maternity photos truly special. I’ll coordinate wardrobe for your entire family so everything looks intentional and cohesive.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Maternity Session
On the day of your session, your only job is to show up. Here’s how the experience typically flows:
You’ll arrive at the studio where professional hair and makeup will be waiting for you. While you’re being pampered, we’ll finalize your wardrobe selections together. Once you’re feeling gorgeous and confident, we’ll move into your session – which is calm, guided, and completely unhurried. I handle all of the posing and direction, so you never have to guess what to do with your hands or where to look. If your partner or children are there, I’ll guide them too. The whole experience is designed to feel like a deep breath – a moment to slow down, connect, and actually enjoy this season you’re in.
After your session, you’ll have a personal ordering appointment where you’ll view your fully edited images and I’ll help you select heirloom artwork for your home – albums, framed fine art prints, matted prints in linen keepsake boxes, and more. Everything is designed and delivered for you.

Brooke is the owner and lead photographer at Petite Magnolia Photography, just outside of Pittsburgh in McMurray, PA. A former pediatric ICU nurse and nurse anesthetist, she brings a level of calm, safety awareness, and genuine care to every session that goes well beyond photography. She specializes in maternity, newborn, baby, and family photography with a focus on documenting the quiet connections, the genuine emotions, and those little moments that make each season of family life worth remembering. Her approach is simple: create timeless images that feel like you. She serves families throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities — including the South Hills, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, Sewickley, Peters Township, and Morgantown, WV. She believes photographs should document the love and connection your family shares right now, and that those images deserve to live somewhere more meaningful than a phone camera roll. That’s why she guides her clients through creating heirloom albums, fine art prints, and keepsake pieces they’ll return to for generations.
